This season Versace delivers the most memorable Milan fashion week in years! Vanguard designer Donatella Versace (5’4″ age 62) Spring 2018 show, featured a massive supermodel reunion of epic proportions. By bringing back Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni, and Helena Christensen, wearing glittering gold lame, to the accepting cheers and hearty applause of the audience, with the revival of the house’s signature silk prints in the same fell swoop. The Versace house reinforced its reputation for star showmanship.

Other fashion houses may take inspiration from the ’90s, but Versace was part of what defined the era.  The reemergence of the “original supermodels” provided Milan with a welcome refresher of energy by breaking down age stereotypes proving that age doesn’t define beauty.  With second-generation stars like Kaia Gerber capturing the public’s attention and a growing push away from the social media-centric ethos that has dominated runways in recent years, the public is hungry for models who are reminiscent of the ’90s.

At the Versace show that desire was evident with the presence of newer stars like Birgit Kos, Tami Williams, Nora Attal, and Faretta, all of whom adhere to old-school ideas of what a model “should look like.” However, the rat pack of Supermodels encapsulate the tall, toned, and unapologetically feminine, they look like “real adult women,” rather than ‘teenage girls playing dress up.”

Also, present were household names Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid—newsflash; they are arguably considered supermodels for this era. The usual suspects Binx Walton, Natasha Poly, and Mariacarla Boscono, Versace’s “ideal women,” were front and center. Nonetheless, nostalgia for the Supermodel era has never been stronger, and we loved it!

Perhaps the Versace message espousing “real women,” the Supermodel Stars, ages 51, 49, 48, and 47 respectively, women like Crawford, Bruni, Christensen, and Campbell are a rarity on the runways. Consider this the overwhelming majority of runway models used this month are under the age of 20. The Versace showcase of Supermodels with their real-world influence to back up their stunningly gorgeous looks was a welcome change of pace, and one that other fashion houses ought to take a cue from.

Versace and casting director Piergiorgio Del Moro’s choice to fill the show with multiple generations of beautiful, powerful women of all ages was a revolutionary thought that doesn’t occur in an industry mired in the past of old-school-snore-bore-rules set by old dogs that refuse to learn new tricks. What we already know at Bella Petite Magazine is age doesn’t dictate beauty, (nor does height). Therefore, the runways should portray a vision of beauty that isn’t solely focused on youth and taller heights so that all women may embrace fashion!

What a momentous occasion when you can have girl-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber and her mother Cindy Crawford walking the same collection, it shows precisely how relevant those fashions are.

Perhaps to aggravate a real paradigm shift for an epic fashion week, it should be lead by the petite powerhouse designer herself 5’4″ Donatella Versace, along with Bella Petite Magazine! The time is now for a real change up to happen on the runways. Certainly, Versace could handle the risk for the reward.

Our call to action, share this article if you agree, let’s go viral with our message and get Donatella Versace on board with us!
