THE DOWNSIDE TO BEING SHORT…According to Mainstream Media

Please note: that all the information contained in this article was found in Allure Magazine with stats and research provided by psychologists Linda A. Jackson and Kelly S. Irvin of Michigan State University. In addition to ABC 20/20 Barbara Walters Interviews.

Negative stereotypes promoted by fashion magazines, the media’s constant portrayal of tall slender models and tall commanding executive types has created the perception of a downside to being short.  It’s truly disturbing to read studies and watch television programs about height and how it effects psychological ideology about an individuals beauty, professional abilities and intelligence.

Unfortunately it’s true, studies reveal that petite women are perceived to be less attractive and inept in the workplace… and that’s offensive! That is why Bella Petite was founded to help change negative height related stereotypes and provide a positive ideology empowering for the petite woman.

Article in ALLURE Magazine: (Direct Quote)

Being tall may be a problem for adolescent women when they tower over their peers, but shortness proves the lasting disadvantage.  In their research on height and stereotypes, psychologists Linda A. Jackson and Kelly S. Irvin of Michigan State University asked young adults to rate probable qualities of women who were described as short (4’10”), average height (5’3″), or tall (5’10”).

Contrary to earlier research on gender and height, which found that petite size enhanced a woman’s appeal, the researchers determined that a small women today impress others as both “less attractive” and “lacking in professional competence”.  Still, size alone had no effect on whether whether a woman would be viewed as popular, feminine, athletic, or well adjusted.  Short men (5’6″ & under) fared worse in the survey.  Few thought that short men could be masculine, socially or physically attractive, athletic, secure or successful.

On ABC 20/20 show (Recap of the show)

Barbara Walters conducted secret interviews with a Company seeking executives to fill management positions. Keep in mind the petite female executives interviewed possessed top notch education and management experience, which many of the tall women paled in comparison.

In conclusion, petite women were consistently passed over for their taller counter parts. The individuals conducting the interview process stated, the petite ladies were perceived in lacking intelligence, competence and leadership abilities, solely due to their lack of height.

Furthermore, they felt the male executives would treat the petite women with less respect.  The same ideology applied for men under 5’8″ tall.  Studies also reveal that men earn greater income at 5’9″ plus.

  6. These women are all hypocrites and full of sh*t. All of these women are screaming and shouting about the PETITE REVOLUTION, but I bet they’d all be the FIRST to say they don’t date or care for short men, for the same reason, the fashion world prefers tall women…..

    1. Hello Jonathon, this article is referring to researched studies and our feelings about the flawed ideology. BellaPetite is here to build confidence in petite women. None of these women deserve your nasty remarks. Lastly, the fashion industry uses tall models only because they are considered “clothes hangers” and not simply for beauty sake. And many men in entertainment are short ie. Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom, Michael J. Fox etc and we love them!
